A Gold Rush town 30 minutes from Yosemite National Park normally brims with tourists who visit for thundering waterfalls and abundant wildflowers. 

But this year, hundreds of visitors canceled their reservations in early May, after an unexpected road closure cut off the town's direct access into Yosemite Valley.
