GROSSE POINTE FARMS (WWJ) - Police in Grosse Pointe Farms say they're currently investigating after a pipe bomb was discovered at Pier Park on Detroit's east side on Friday.

In statement released on Saturday, the Gosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety said they were notified on Friday, June 2nd, just after 11:00 a.m. about a suspicious metal object found at the Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park.

Police said a park employee stumbled across the object near the pedestrian drop-off are and threw it into the lake.

"Further investigation revealed that the object was approximately 5-6 inches long and resembled a pipe bomb," authorities continued. "The area was secured, and technicians from the Michigan State Police, ATF, and the Detroit Bomb Squad were called for assistance."

The Grosse Pointe Farms Dive Team went down into the lake and were able to recover the object near a break wall. After examination, officials confirmed it was a pipe bomb.

The explosive was neutralized by technicians at the scene, police said. Pier Park was evacuated and closed to the public for the rest of the day on Friday to "allow for a comprehensive sweep of the grounds and buildings.'

No other dangerous objects were found, authorities added, and the park was reopened as normal the morning of Saturday, June 3rd.

At this time, police are continuing their investigation into the incident. No other information as released.
