On Monday night, Gresham police said they performed a wellness check and found William “Tom” Vaughn, 76, dead at a residence on Southeast Stark Street.

According to detectives, Vaughn’s death has been ruled a homicide and is under investigation.

Neighbors who spoke with KOIN 6 News were visibly shocked at the news of Vaughn’s murder.

“I have not slept nearly as well as I did before this,” said Donnis Shirley who has lived at the Suburban Mobile Estates, directly across the street from where Vaughn lived, for nearly a decade.

The uncertainty of Vaughn’s death has left many neighbors anxious and unsettled.

“I don’t know if I’d stay here if I didn’t feel comfortable. You know, I still do but when you have something like this happen so close to you, it kind of gives you kind of second thoughts about, do I want to stay here or do I want to move somewhere else?” Shirley said.

The mobile community of her home is tight-knit, with those living there 55 or older. Shirley said she hopes to get answers soon.

“I don’t know what happened. It’s just a mystery to me today — that why something couldn’t have stopped, that something couldn’t have been done.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gresham police.
