POLICE & FIRE
Fire on Greenwich Ave
The Greenwich Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire near the intersection of West Putnam Avenue and Greenwich Avenue. As the units were en route, additional calls continued to pour in. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a significant blaze at the rear of the building, with flames extending to the top floor. Thanks to an aggressive and swift attack, the fire was prevented from spreading further into the cockloft. Multiple units, including E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, T1, C4, FC3, were involved in the operation. GPD Officer Su Ah Sor demonstrated exceptional courage and quick thinking by rushing into the building to assist in evacuating the occupants and ensuring their safety. Although she needed treatment for smoke inhalation at Greenwich Hospital, she has recovered well and is now back on duty. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Greenwich Fire Marshal’s Office which is asking anyone who may have pictures or video of yesterday’s fire at 22 Greenwich Ave to share the information and send it to mark.dawson@greenwichct.org

Greenwich police dispatch center receives $530K Equipment grant
Greenwich police headquarters’ 911 dispatch center will get new equipment through a $530,000 grant. The outdated computers, electronics, furniture, and carpeting will be gradually replaced to avoid disruption. Funding is from the 9-1-1 Telecommunications Fund, and completion is expected by year-end pending final approval. Xybix is consulting on the project.

Summer Beach Season Begins
Greenwich’s summer beach season starts on May 27, 2023, with Greenwich Point and Byram Beach opening. Ferry services to Island Beach and Great Captain’s Island begin on June 10, 2023. Byram Park’s pool area opens on May 26, 2023. Recreational swimming is prohibited at local tidal beaches after heavy rainfall, except for the Island Beaches. Water quality is monitored weekly, and Byram Beach closes for a day after 0.5″ or more of rain. Stay updated on beach activity through the Division of Environmental Services Beach Hot Line and the Town of Greenwich website. The Departments of Health and Parks and Recreation wish everyone a happy summer.

Greenwich Board of Health hearing addresses proposed gas leaf blower changes
A crowded Board of Health hearing in Greenwich discussed proposed changes to the gas leaf blower ordinance. Supporters and opponents spoke, with Quiet Yards Greenwich proposing a phased reduction in residential gas leaf blower use. Around 75 attendees supported increased restrictions, while landscapers opposed them due to economic burdens. The Health Department Director emphasized transparency and addressing health effects. No immediate vote was scheduled. Speakers highlighted concerns about the cost and limitations of electric blowers, contrasting the benefits of reduced pollution and noise levels.

Glenville mixed-use building proposal awaits planning commission review
​​A proposal has been submitted to the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Department for a mixed-use retail and residential building in Glenville. It would replace a Victorian house and garage on Glenville Street and Angelus Drive. The new building would include retail space, four two-bedroom rental units per floor, and provisions for moderate income housing and parking. The proposal has received initial acceptance from the Greenwich Historic District Commission. A traffic study suggests minimal impact on traffic, and the project is awaiting review by the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission.

Round Hill Music eyes Greenwich Avenue expansion
Crazy Goodies LLC, known as Round Hill Music, is interested in the former EuroChasse site on Greenwich Avenue. They have applied to expand the bottom floor and confirm office uses on the upper floors. The nature of the proposed operation is not specified, but it may involve an upscale music retail experience. The property was purchased for $3.05 million in 2020. Further details and comments are not currently available. The application is awaiting review by the Planning & Zoning Commission.

Pemberwick Dam: Ownership Complications and Safety Concerns
The Pemberwick Dam has a high hazard potential and hasn’t been regularly inspected for ten years due to ownership complications. A recent inspection funded by the town revealed the dam to be in fair condition. However, future safety inspections may be neglected without active owners. The dam is classified as hazard class C, posing significant risks if it fails. The ownership is unclear, and efforts are underway to contact the owners for safety measures. The inspection recommends regular maintenance, inspections, and an emergency action plan. Another state inspection is scheduled for 2025.

Greenwich Hospital employees donate 97 bags to YWCA Domestic Abuse Services
Greenwich Hospital employees have contributed to assisting individuals in need by donating 97 bags filled with new personal care items to YWCA Domestic Abuse Services. This donation, organized by the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Council (DEI&B Council) and the Professional Nursing Governance Healing Environment Council, was part of a Yale New Haven Health initiative. The bags contained essential items such as shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, grooming products, sunblock, and skincare items.

Got Undies?
The Undies Project launched the “Got Undies?” campaign to raise $10,000 for new underwear for homeless individuals, those in shelters, and people facing financial difficulties. The campaign features a silent auction and testimonial videos highlighting the importance of clean underwear for hygiene, comfort, dignity, and self-esteem. Greenwich Library unveils stunning Rain Garden oasis

Christine Lai Receives 2023 Liberty Bell Award
Christine Lai, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Special Education Legal Fund received the 2023 Liberty Bell Award at the Greenwich Bar Association’s Law Day Luncheon. The organization, S.E.L.F., helps economically disadvantaged families navigate the special education system through grants for legal representation. Lai’s personal experiences drive her mission to make special education accessible to all. The Liberty Bell Award, established in 1967, recognizes community service and the Law Day Speaker was Paul Mounds, Jr., currently Vice President at Yale New Haven Health.

Sofia’s Hats4Healing brings warmth and support
Greenwich High School senior Sofia Iuteri founded Hats4Healing, a non-profit that has donated over 1000 handmade items to pediatric cancer patients worldwide. Inspired by her grandmother’s battle with cancer, Sofia combined her passion for knitting with her desire to help others. Hats4Healing provides hats and various other handmade items for warmth and support. The organization has gained significant support through school outreach and social media. Stephen L. Bishop to be honored with Leadership Award
Stephen L. Bishop will receive the Leadership Award from the Greenwich Preservation Trust for his dedication to historic preservation. As Chairman of the Historic District Commission, he has been instrumental in preserving and repurposing significant structures in Greenwich. GCDSUS Wins Perfect Score at ACSL International Competition

Greenwich students bring joy with plant delivery
Fourth-grade students from Sacred Heart Greenwich delivered 25 decorated plants to Greenwich Woods Rehabilitation and Health Center. They were accompanied by their school coordinator and adorned the courtyard with the plants. The residents warmly welcomed them and asked about their motivation. GHS Boys Tennis Team Undefeated Champions
The Greenwich High School boys tennis team has had an undefeated season with a record of 18-0. They clinched the FCIAC Tournament championship, which had eluded them since 2014, by defeating rival Darien in a close 4-3 victory. This win marks the team’s 17th FCIAC Tournament title. The championship match showcased exceptional tennis in both singles and doubles play.

Darien Dominates, Advances to FCIAC Girls Lacrosse Final
Darien displayed dominance in the FCIAC Girls Lacrosse Tournament semifinals against Greenwich after conceding the first goal. Led by Chloe Humphrey’s impressive performance, Darien secured a commanding 16-2 victory. With an undefeated record of 17-0, Darien advanced to the FCIAC final against rival New Canaan, who has been the reigning champion for the past two seasons.

Lawrenceville Upsets Brunswick in Double Overtime Thriller
Defending champion Brunswick School had a three-goal lead in the fourth quarter of the Prep Nationals Championship against Lawrenceville School. However, Lawrenceville rallied and forced overtime. In a dramatic double overtime, Lawrenceville scored with 3:06 remaining to secure a 14-13 victory over Brunswick. Brunswick finished the season with a 13-4 record and a No. 5 ranking, while Lawrenceville ended with a 19-1 record and the top spot in the national rankings.

Sacred Heart Greenwich Ends Season with Dominant Win
Sacred Heart Greenwich concluded their successful 2023 season with a 15-5 victory over Phillips Exeter Academy. Karina Sethi scored three goals and had one assist in her final game for the Tigers. Payton Sfreddo contributed two goals and two assists, while Kelly Haggerty added two goals and one assist. Other goal scorers included Kaitlin Robinson, Maggie Bacigalupo, Wowie Walker, Daphne Fallon, and Ryan Hodge, with an assist from Ava Lillis.

This triumph capped off a successful 12-6 season for the Bruins and added to Montanez’s impressive coaching career, which included numerous tournament and regular season championships. The team showcased their dominance by scoring six runs in the first inning of the championship game.

Brunswick Crew Triumphs, Secures Spot at National Championships
Brunswick School’s crew team won gold at the USRowing Northeast Youth Championships, qualifying them for the USRowing Youth National Championships in Florida. They showcased their dominance by building a significant lead in the race. With previous gold and silver medals under their belt, they now prepare for the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta.

Darien Upsets Greenwich in FCIAC Girls Tennis Semifinals

To secure a spot, they need to finish in the top 4 at the USRowing Northeast Youth Championships. In the Time Trial event, Brunswick’s crew emerged victorious with a time of 6:41.672, earning them a place in the semifinals. They will compete in semifinal No. 1, and the top 3 finishers from each semifinal will advance to the Grand Final.

Sacred Heart Greenwich Dominates in Prep Invitational Opener
Sacred Heart Greenwich dominated their opening game in the Prep Invitational lacrosse tournament, winning 12-3 against Dexter Southfield School. Led by senior Kelly Haggerty’s three goals, the team showcased strong defense and contributions from multiple players. With a 7-3 halftime lead, Sacred Heart prevented Dexter Southfield from scoring in the second half. Sophomore Charley Bacigalupo recorded two goals and three assists, while juniors Payton Sfreddo and Maggie Bacigalupo each contributed two goals.

GHS Boys Volleyball Falls Short in FCIAC Quarterfinals
Greenwich High School’s boys volleyball team put up a strong fight against Trumbull in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals, but ultimately lost 3-0. Trumbull will advance to the semifinals to face Ridgefield. Senior co-captain Ben Bowers led the Cardinals with nine kills and three digs. Greenwich’s season is not over, as they will compete in the CIAC Class L Tournament starting on May 31.

Brunswick Advances to Prep Nationals Championship Game
Brunswick emerged victorious against Salisbury School in the semifinal round of the Prep Nationals tournament, securing a spot in the championship game. Led by junior attack Casey Quinson’s four goals and one assist, as well as senior midfielder Tomas Delgado’s two goals and four assists, the Bruins dominated the game with a 15-9 victory. This win mirrored their success against Salisbury in the previous season’s semifinals.

GHS Boys Lacrosse Falls in Close Senior Day Game
Despite holding the lead for most of the game, Greenwich’s boys lacrosse team suffered a setback on Senior Day as St. Joseph staged a comeback and secured an 11-10 victory. The loss in the regular-season finale left the Cardinals with a 6-10 record, falling short of qualifying for the CIAC Class L Tournament. Despite their strong strength of schedule and being ranked 9th in Class L, the team’s six victories were not enough to secure a tournament spot, as teams with more wins and weaker schedules qualified instead.

GHS Girls Golf Team Remains Undefeated with Victories
Greenwich High School’s girls golf team continued their undefeated season with two victories against FCIAC opponents. They defeated Staples with a score of 175-201 and Ridgefield with a score of 183-228. Junior Bella Crasto led the team with a 9-hole score of 43, supported by strong performances from junior Charlotte Langhorne, sophomore Ally Bauer, and junior Caroline McShea, each carding a 44.

Sacred Heart Goalie Shines in Win Over Hotchkiss
Sacred Heart Greenwich senior goalie Laura O’Connor excelled in a 10-7 win against Hotchkiss School. She made 15 saves, surpassing 200 career saves and reaching a total of 209. O’Connor also scored over 100 goals this season, now with 109 saves. The victory extended Sacred Heart’s winning streak to nine games, and they currently hold a record of 14-1. Kelly Haggerty, senior attack/captain, contributed four goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Kaitlin Robinson scored four goals.

National Public Works Week
Governor Ned Lamont has declared this past week as National Public Works Week in Connecticut, recognizing the dedicated efforts of the Greenwich Public Works (DPW) staff. The DPW consists of six divisions that work diligently to maintain and improve the town’s infrastructure, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

Attorney General William Tong back federal ban on handgun sales to under 21
Attorney General William Tong and 21 other attorneys general support the federal ban on selling handguns and ammunition to people under 21. They filed a brief in the Reese v. ATF case, defending age restrictions dating back to 1968. They argue that these regulations protect public safety and are allowed under the Second Amendment. Many states have similar laws, and the attorneys general back the federal government’s defense of these regulations.
