The Greeneville Lady Devils softball team hosted the North Greene Lady Huskies on Tuesday at Hardin Park in a game that was halted with two out in the top of the fourth inning due to rain.

The Lady Devils got in plenty of swings, though, cranking out 12 hits in a 14-0 win and improving to 21-12.

It was senior night for Greeneville with Madison Carpenter, Leah Phillips, Lydia Darnell, Lauren Million, Stoan Rader and Lila Richey being honored before the game.

“It was a good day but a tough day,” Greeneville coach Matt Million said. “Six seniors leaving ... they’re like daughters to me. They’ve spent a lot of time at my house these past few years. Tonight was about a lot more than softball. There’s a lot of people that care about the girls here tonight. But the girls played well. Very happy.

“They came in and several of them had to play as freshmen or sophomores. Leah’s been our stud for three years on the mound and they’ve just won us a lot of softball games. It was a tough day but it was a good day to see them grow and mature and move on in life.”

Greeneville grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Kyla Jobe solo home run, a Kaley Garland RBI single and a Rader RBI groundout, and the Lady Devils cruised from there.

Jobe finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer and two RBI, Garland was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, Carpenter was 2-for-2 with two RBI, Lauren Million had a double and two RBI, Rader had a hit and two RBI, Darnell and D Destani Bailey each had a double and an RBI, and Phillips had a hit and an RBI.

“They had a good approach and we were able to let the ball get deep and pick out good pitches,” Matt Million said of his batters. “We adjusted to the umpire’s zone pretty quick. We had a tough time adjusting to the umpire’s zone last night (against Claiborne). We struggled a little bit to square a lot of balls up. But today, they did a good job of adjusting to the umpire and making the pitcher throw strikes, and when she did, we hit them.”

Phillips pitched the entire 3 2/3 innings. She gave up two hits, walked none and struck out seven.

“Leah was as sharp tonight as she’s been all year,” Matt Million said. “It’s good to see that at this time of the year, and Leah would tell you herself, she wasn’t super sharp last night. She was a little tight, a little sore, but she was throwing it today.”

North Greene’s two hits were a Hannah Brooks double in the first inning and a Loren Blevins single in the fourth.

    North Greene falls to 8-8.
