Greene firefighters assisted Madison with 12 fires on Wednesday A wildfire – one of at least 12 in Madison County Wednesday afternoon and night – destroyed the Madison Hockey League rink located behind the American Legion building off Thrift Road. Madison County Volunteer Fire Company Chief Troy Coppage said Wednesday night as he reviewed the hockey rink fire scene that all the fires appeared to begin from "natural causes.” "We believe power lines struck trees and sparked the fires,” Coppage said. "It doesn’t appear that any were caused by stupidity.” SLIDESHOW: Madison Hockey Rink Fire. Photos by Chuck Jackson and contributions. Dave Sisson, who was a volunteer with the hockey league...

Tarot's Path: The Hierophant and Eight of Swords
We’ve all heard the story of the cook who, whenever making a roast, cut off the end and put it aside. When her partner asked why they always did that, the answer was always, “That’s the way my mother always did it and she taught me to cook.” One day the partner, fed up with the waste of a hunk of roast, called their mother-in-law to ask what culinary purpose is served by cutting off the end of the roast. “None,” she replied. “It’s just that my only pan was too small for the whole thing to fit.” The Hierophant is a big proponent of tradition and sticking to “the old ways” without question. While honoring history and tradition is worthy of consideration, willful ignorance of lessons learned can leave us trapped in a past that no longer applies. The Eight of Swords remains blinded and bound, in spite of the fact that she can easily escape the swords surrounding her. With courage and desire, she can break free of the formerly dangerous elements of her past and forge ahead, unencumbered.
ORMN BirdBlog: What bird is called The American Nightingale?
The Northern Mockingbird perched on a tree branch. MadRapp/GreeneJournal photo courtesy of ORMN member Deanne Lawrence. The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is found year-round throughout the continental United States. It lives in populated areas as well as open land. In the spring mockingbirds sing almost continuously—earning the nickname "American Nightingale”, often mimicking the songs of other birds in the area. The quote attributed to Atticus Finch about mockingbirds fromTo Kill A Mockingbird was based on their singing behavior. "Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for...

Greene Supervisors: How much is a human life worth?
That’s the question At-Large member Francis X. McGuigan, MD, asked at a recent Greene County Board of Supervisor Fiscal Year 2025 Budget work session. Specifically, Dr. McGuigan put the question forward in a more-blunt way: "How many people died because we didn’t get to them?” In context, his questioning of county Administrator Cathy Schafrik and Director of Emergency Services Melissa G. Meador came when Meador asked the board for six new positions that consisted of three medics and three emergency medical technicians for the county’s paid emergency medical services staff. Meador noted that when both ambulances are transporting to a hospital more than 30 minutes away that leaves no staff or ambulance for...
