The Green River Pirates were ready to face the Diamond Ranch Academy Diamondbacks at home on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately Diamond Ranch had to forfeit the game, giving the Pirates a win, allowing them to advance in the 1A State Basketball Championships.

Green River finished the regular season with a 10-14 overall record including a Region 23 mark of 2-6, earning them the No.15 spot in the RPI. The last time the Pirates were on the floor was a close one-point victory over De Beque, a team from Colorado, 49-48.

This season, junior Luis Hernandez has led the Pirates averaging just under 11 points at 10.87. Junior Raul Mendoza is averaging 7.61 and  senior Bridjer Meadows 7.43.

The Manila Mustangs finished the regular season 19-4 overall with a 9-1 mark in Region 22 play earning them the No. 2 spot in the 1A RPI. Their last regular season game was a home win over Mount Vernon Academy 58-45.

Manila has been led by a pair of seniors this season, as senior Tuck Davis has led the team in points per game (17.8), rebounds per game (6.2), and steals (2.6). Senior Kyler Hughes leads the team with 5.8 assists.

These two teams met up back in Dec. 2020 with the Mustangs handing the Pirates a 67-22 loss.

The 2023 version is set to tip-off on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at  Richfield High School in the second round.

A win for Green River will move them to the quarterfinals for a meeting with the winner of the No. 7 Wendover, No. 10 Pinnacle match-up on Thursday. A loss will end the pirates season.
