Packers head coach conveys clear farewell to Aaron Rodgers

By Ryan Chichester,

Speaking with reporters at the NFL meetings on Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur sure seemed to say his farewells to Aaron Rodgers.

“I’ve got nothing but love and appreciation for what Aaron has done for so many in our organization. Had a lot of great times together, won a lot of football games together,” LaFleur said. “He’s done so much for myself, our coaches, our coaches families. A lot of people have been rewarded for his ability to go out and play at such a high level. I’m just gonna leave it at that.

“It is what it is. At the same time, we’re excited about Jordan [Love] and how he’s been able to progress as a quarterback.”

Packers president Mark Murphy seemingly did the same earlier this month, before Rodgers revealed that he wants to play for the Jets next season.
still, a trade hasn’t been worked out, though LaFleur strongly indicated, like Murphy did, that Love is the team’s starting quarterback heading into next season.

“I think he just wanted to know what was going on,” LaFleur said. “For a long period of time, I couldn’t tell him, because I didn’t know where it was headed. There’s obviously some clarity to it, but nothing is final yet.”

There is no final agreement just yet, and while many expect it to get done, LaFleur wouldn’t comment on the hypothetical, and unlikely, scenario where Rodgers doesn’t get traded, and is back with Green Bay in 2023.

“We’ll coach whoever is on our roster, and we’re gonna coach them to the best of our ability, and always put the best players out there who will give us an opportunity to win football games,” LaFleur said.
