New York Jets Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Over the past several weeks, it’s become quite clear that the New York Jets have gone all-in on trying to lure Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It seems to have worked, with Rodgers revealing that he plans to play for the Jets next season as the Packers and Jets continue to work out a trade. But if Rodgers didn’t agree to join the Jets, the team had quite a bold backup plan: Matthew Stafford.

According to a recent report from NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Matthew Stafford emerged as a realistic “Plan B” if the Jets weren’t able to lure Aaron Rodgers, saying that the Rams would have “welcomed the opportunity to trade Stafford” and that the Jets would have been interested if Rodgers chose to retire or sign elsewhere.

“And, yes, the Rams would have (we’re told) welcomed the opportunity to trade Stafford. If Aaron Rodgers hadn’t decided to join the Jets, Stafford could have become the Plan B, if he would have been willing to go to New York,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk on Monday.

Obviously, it’s unlikely to happen now as it’s become clear that Rodgers will end up in New York, one way or another. But it is certainly interesting to think about.
