The 'Why' film is an important resource for people living with dementia and their caregivers. It provides an accurate and compassionate portrayal of the disease, and it offers hope for the future. The 'Why' film is a short documentary about early-stage dementia, produced by the KU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

“The film 'Why' addresses some of the barriers in recognizing and addressing early cognitive changes as well as supporting a hopeful, empowered approach to moving forward,” said Michelle Niedens LSCSW and Director of the Cognitive Care Network.  “Featured in the film are individuals diagnosed with various types of dementia, family members, providers and researchers.”  Part of the filming was done at Clara Barton Medical Clinic in Hoisington with Dr. Scott Webb and Macy Liebl, RN, Clara Barton Clinic Nurse Manager, included among the speakers.

The film follows three people with early-stage dementia and their families as they navigate the challenges of the disease. The film also features commentary from Dr. Jeffrey Burns, co-director of the KU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, who discusses the latest research on dementia and its treatments.  Dr. Scott Webb adds a personal perspective of coping with the disease.

According to Macy Liebl, this movie was created in conjunction with CBMC partnership with the KU Alzheimer's Disease Research Program. “They are a phenomenal network of people who all have the same goal of educating and providing support to those affected by the disease as well as their families”, Leibl said.  “CBMC has been collaborating with this program since 2019. Michelle Niedens comes to both our Hoisington and Great Bend clinic locations to meet with patients and families and help them navigate the disease process.”

In addition, Liebl and Lauren Kristek, CBMC RN,  assist Niedens with a support group that is held once a month for caregivers in the Hoisington Library. “We have had excellent turn out and feedback over the last couple of years and are excited about its growth. Dr. Webb was brought in on this project as he has a passion for diagnosing and treating those affected by dementia and has personal experience with his own Mother,” Liebl explained.

The film was made possible by a grant from the Alzheimer's Association. It was directed by David Madden and produced by Dr. Jeffrey Burns.  The film was screened at the KU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center on May 16, 2023.

The Why film was created to raise awareness of dementia and to provide support to people with dementia and their families. The film has been screened at numerous community events and has been well-received by audiences.  If you or someone you know is living with dementia, you are encouraged to watch the Why film. It is an important resource that can help you understand and cope with this challenging disease.
