This month’s spotlight falls on Roman Balun, of Tillamook’s Wilson River School. Recognized by the Oregon Free Masons for his dedication and the difference that it makes in young lives, Roman’s class already has big plans to put their generous support to good use.
Take a rhod trip to the wetlands
Layers of wood chips and mulch soften the steps along the half dozen connecting trails that crisscross the Cutler City Wetlands Open Space, pathways lined with deep green thickets of salal, elderberry and evergreen huckleberry. The trails wind and loop through a terrain that is remarkably diverse for an area only slightly more than 26 acres. At the eastern end and in the center, are the swampy ponds or skunk-weed marshes that give the open space its name. There are also a few majestic old-growth Sitkas, thick stands of alders and shore pines, their trunks cloaked in the pale green feathers of Oregon beaked moss.

Asphalt pavement will be placed at the Cape Kiwanda Parking Lot and Cape Kiwanda Drive frontage starting May 13th through May 17th. The Linfield Wildcats’ softball team remained unbeaten this season as they prepare to host a NCAA Division III Regional playoff series. The Wildcats defeated Lewis & Clark 6-2 on Sunday to move their record to 43-0 and capture their sixth consecutive Northwest Conference title. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats, the only undefeated team in Division III, went 3-0 at the NWC Tournament to win the tournament after having won the regular season championship.
Tillamook Fire seeks levy
The Tillamook Fire District is asking voters to approve a five-year levy to support district operations on the May primary ballot. If approved, the levy would add 84 cents per thousand dollars of assessed value to tax bills in the district to support equipment maintenance and the hiring of new staff.
