Woman hit while trying to help after Grand Rapids crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman is in the hospital after she was hit while trying to help after a crash in Grand Rapids early Sunday morning.

Around 1:15 a.m., officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department were sent to the area of 28th Street SE and Madison Avenue SE for two crashes.

The initial crash happened after a vehicle on Madison Avenue ran a flashing red light and hit a vehicle on 28th Street, GRPD said.

Officers said a 32-year-old Wyoming woman who witnessed the crash got out of her vehicle to try to help. A passing vehicle hit one of the vehicles involved in the crash, causing it to hit the woman.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. GRPD said she is in critical condition. The extent of her injuries is unknown.

The condition of the drivers involved in the initial crash has not been released.

GRPD said one of the drivers involved was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

The crash remains under investigation.
