A Grand Island man has been sentenced on charges of fleeing from officers in his vehicle before crashing into a fence and hiding in a residence.
John Chamberlin, 40, was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, first-degree criminal trespassing and obstructing a peace officer.
The sentence will be served after his sentencing in two, unrelated cases where he was sentenced to a total four years in prison on charges of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, possession of a controlled substance and failure to appear.
The former charges stem from a February incident where Grand Island Police attempted to stop a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Chamberlin due to not having his lights on and failing to stop at two stop signs.
GIPD said Chamberlin allegedly fled from officers at excessive speeds and drove through the parking lot of Super Saver, 1602 W. Second St., before continuing on. He eventually crashed into a fence at the Grand Island Utilities building, 1306 West Third St., which left his vehicle immobile.
Capt. Jim Duering said this caused an estimated $4,500 in damage to the fence and property.
GIPD said Chamberlin then allegedly fled on foot and entered a residence in the 300 block of Washington Street to hide from police.
