GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) - UPDATE: The Grand Forks Police Department released details today on what they know about the dead man found at the Grand Forks Airport on March 25.

Police say the man is 30-year-old Tyler James Richard Smith of Selkirk, MB Canada.

Officials say on March 24, just before 2 am, officers checked out with a pickup occupied by Smith. They say Smith was passed out behind the wheel. As an officer made contact with him, Smith fled the scene and a pursuit started. It lasted several minutes and was stopped because of the high speeds.

Later that day, around 2:30 in the afternoon, GFPD says it assisted University of North Dakota officers at the airport for a report of a suspicious vehicle stuck in the snow by the UND James Ray hanger. Police say it was Smith’s vehicle, but no one was in it.

That evening around 8:30, Smith’s family reported him as a missing person.

The morning of March 25, area law enforcement and Grand Forks Airport Fire started a search for Smith. After several hours, he was found dead in a field on the east side of the airport property.

Police say this is an ongoing and developing investigation. Anyone with information, or who may have seen what happened, is asked to call GFPD by one of the following:
