Car Collides With Semi, Sparks Brush Fire, Injures Three
Three people were injured during a two-vehicle accident involving a semi truck and a sedan near Moses Lake on Monday afternoon. Police say the wreck occurred at the intersection of Roads W Northeast and 3 Northeast when a 2021 Subaru Outback driven by 48-year-old Simon Simons of Wilbur failed to yield the right of way and collided with a Peterbilt semi that was hauling a load of potatoes.
FRA grants WSDOT $72.8 million for improvements to Palouse River & Coulee City rail system
CHENEY, Wash. — A short-line rail line known for playing a major role in transporting crops for farmers is getting some federal help with making improvements. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced they're giving the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) a $72.8 million Consolidated Railroad Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant for improvements to the Palouse River and Coulee City (PCC) short-line rail system.

Subaru, potato truck collision leads to injuries
MOSES LAKE — Three people were transported to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries after their car caught fire in a collision Monday afternoon. Simon Simons, 48, of Wilbur and his passenger Erika Simons, also 48, of Wilbur were driving south in a 2021 Subaru Outback on Road W Northeast just east of Moses Lake at about 5 p.m., according to Grant County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman. Simons ran the stop sign at Road 3 Northeast at about 55 miles per hour and was struck by a 2008 Peterbilt 386 loaded with potatoes and driven by Jesus Munoz Chacon, 37, of Warden.
Grand Coulee woman sentenced in knife slashing
EPHRATA - A Grand Coulee woman was sentenced to several months in jail after she was convicted of assault in the second degree last week. 59-year-old Leilani Ibsen was arrested on May 20, 2022 in Electric City after she attacked a woman at a home whom she thought was having sex with her boyfriend. The 44-year-old woman she attacked was apparently not engaging in sexual activity, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Electric City man sentenced to prison for shooting at bail bondsman
ELECTRIC CITY - An Electric City man was sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison after firing a gun at a bail bondsman in November 2022. 39-year-old Christopher Morgan shot at a bail bondsman who had attempted to arrest him on a warrant. A probable cause affidavit says Morgan shot at the bail bondsman when he entered Morgan's trailer in the area of Sunny Drive and 5th Street in Electric City. The bail bondsman wasn't hit, but he did return fire and left the scene to contact law enforcement. Morgan wasn't hit by the return fire.

Bridge consumed by fire to be replaced quickly
WINONA — A train trestle that will replace the old structure destroyed in the Winona Fire is expected to be built by early November. Also known as the Hooper Bridge, the Palouse River Coulee City short-line railroad’s wooden structure was lost in the fire, which began Aug. 18 and was estimated to be around 2,500 acres. Along with the trestle, it destroyed a residence, damaged another and burned down 24 outbuildings.
