GRAFTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Grafton baseball standout Ben Louzy has been selected to play in the annual North-South all-star game on June 4 at George Washington High School after an outstanding senior campaign in which he helped guide coach Bartsel Keener’s team to a 7-13 overall record.
Playing primarily in the outfield, Louzy compiled a .262 batting average, recording 16 hits on 61 at-bats, scored 17 runs, plated nine RBIs, stole 10 bases and amassed an insanely efficient .970 fielding percentage after coming up with 30 put-outs on 33 total chances.
Ben was humbly honored to be selected to play in this prestigious game.
“This is one of the biggest moments in my life to be selected for something like this. I can’t wait to play in this event for my team and coaches. They have always had my back and i am always going to have theirs,” Louzy said.
“When the season started, I was excited to see what we could accomplish as a team and while we fell short of our team-goal of making it to Charleston, it will be good consolation prize to be able to represent Grafton one last time on the diamond,” Louzy said.
It’s been quite awhile since a baseball player from Grafton High was selected to play in the North-South game, yet Louzy earned the honor to break that streak with his work ethic, leadership, drive and dedication to improvement.
“Throughout the course of his career, Ben has developed into a solid outfielder and hitter. He is a quiet hardworking kid. He had a stellar senior season for us. We made an adjust, sliding him into a role as our lead off hitter to set the table for some of the others behind him to allow us to score runs,” Grafton baseball coach Bartsel Keener said.
“Ben has done everything I asked him to do and more. His grades were lacking when he committed to playing baseball. We put him on a strict improvement plan that he followed, flawlessly. I credit this plan to Ben being able to graduate on time. He was putting in the extra work to be an every inning player and working hard in the books after practice. It wasn’t always easy but Ben has always been coachable and receptive to the standard that I expected of him. He has been a joy to coach and is an ideal representative for our baseball program in the North-South game. For me as a coach, it tells me we are developing baseball players and young men that are ready for their next phase of life.” Keener finished.
