Gordon County Sheriff’s Office investigates mail thefts
On December 6, the Sheriff’s Office received two reports of mail having been stolen from mailboxes on Rock Creek Road, and nearby Battle Road in the Curryville community. At about noon Wednesday, a citizen who resides on Rock Creek Road reported a suspicious white automobile stopping at his mailbox and taking mail.
County Approves Student Plan to Honor Late Tennis Coach Jeffrey Gallman
Thanks to a push from players, a plan to honor a late tennis coach should soon become a reality. The same Sonoraville High School tennis players who recently lobbied for upgrades to the Gordon County Parks and Recreation tennis facility they use for practices and matches now have a plan to memorialize one of their mentors at the site.
County Considering Recreational Vehicle Code Change
A potential change to the county code dealing with recreational vehicles could give locals more options when it comes to building a home. During their work session and regular meeting this week, Gordon County's Board of Commissioners discussed a Unified Land Development Code update that would allow locals looking to build a home on a piece of county property to live on site in an RV or travel trailer during part of that process.

Gordon County Allows Burn Ban to Expire
A 30-day countywide burn ban enacted Nov. 7 will not be renewed or extended. After a discussion by Gordon County's Board of Commissioners, the recent ban brought on by extreme drought conditions in the area through early fall will not extend past its original Wednesday, Dec. 7, expiration at midnight.

Mattie the Sequoyah Ball Belle of the Ball Dog Dies at 12
This past week was a difficult one for our family. We are mourning the death of our best friend Mattie, a wiry terrier mix dog, after she died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 29. Mattie, 12, was the “belle of the ball” and the live auction item at the Sequoyah Ball in 2011. Her adoption helped raise money for Echota Pet Advocacy and Rescue group. All I knew about Mattie was she was rescued outside of a Dollar General in Gordon County and that Dr. Keri Hogan’s daughter named her Daffodil.
North Georgia Counties Declared Disaster Areas Due to Drought
Farm producers in several north Georgia counties can apply for emergency disaster relief after the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated 12 counties as natural disaster areas due to drought conditions. Farmers can apply for emergency loans through the Farm Service Agency in Bartow, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield counties.
