What happened to the June Concert Series?

Gonzales Main Street redirects efforts to create community engagement

Posted

For 14 years, Gonzales Main Street has held a concert on the square every weekend in June. Since 2008, Gonzales has been host to hundreds of bands. Names like Austin Meed, Chris Ryback, LC Rocks, Magnifico Siete and many others have graced our stage and community over the years.

The primary goal of the June Concert Series was to bring the community together to enjoy downtown Gonzales. Unfortunately, the turnout for the 2022 June Concert Series was truly lacking. Whether it was the heat, the scheduling, the end of the pandemic, or something else, it’s hard to say. But if the goal is community engagement, it appears as though the event had run its course.

After the end of the 2022 June Concert Series, the Gonzales Main Street Board voted to do away with the concert series in favor of hosting multiple events throughout the year.

“Rather than focusing all our energy and resources on one month of community events, we would like to promote our downtown all year long,” said Board President Britney Jones-Caka. “Bringing our community together by offering multiple events throughout the year allows us to partner with various organizations and create ongoing community engagement in our downtown area.”

This year, Gonzales Main Street brought back the City-Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, April 15, 2023; and Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 6, 2023. They also organized a new event, Main Street Roundup, during the TJHRA State Finals to encourage Rodeo attendees to shop Main Street. They also host quarterly Main Street Business Roundtables.

Upcoming events for 2023 include:

• Saturday, June 17 @ Independence Square – Juneteenth Concert, Celebration & Lighted Parade

  • • Thursday, June 22 @ Downtown Businesses – 4th Thursday on Main (businesses open late, traveling musician at various businesses)

“We want to see our community come out and enjoy one another and enjoy our downtown offerings. We encourage everyone to join us. The more support we have from the community, the more we are able to do” says Main Street Director Tiffany Hutchinson-Padilla. “Follow us on Facebook, subscribe to the newspaper, find us on the city website or look for our event posters in our downtown business. We want to get the word out that we are DOING MORE WITH YOUR SUPPORT.”
