Second Chicago Man Charged in a Month for Lasering Police Helicopter

W. Roosevelt Rd. & S. Pulaski Rd. — Reported Laser Incident Area. A 60-year-old Chicago man is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he repeatedly aimed a green laser at a Cook County Sheriff’s Police helicopter flying over the West Side, the second such case brought against a Chicago-area man in less than a month. Allen Florence Jr. is charged with one count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, stemming from an incident on September 15.

Underwater Fiber Line From Chicago Lands at Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor

United Federal Credit Union Headquarters — Project Connection Site. A high-speed internet cable running from Chicago to southwest Michigan under Lake Michigan is now coming ashore at Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor, with crews laying new fiber lines that extend from the lake onto land. The park is one of two landing points for the project, known as Critical Crossings. The project also includes a connection point at United Federal Credit Union's headquarters in St. Joseph, where construction was still in progress on August 25, 2026.

Chicago festival grounds proposal raises questions over benefits

(The Center Square) – Chicago voters overwhelmingly voted Tuesday in support of a permanent festival grounds for the city in a non-binding ballot question. While there was support, the question may have left some with more questions about the proposal. The question, which asked if it should have its own festival grounds on publicly owned land, didn't advise voters of a location, costs to the city’s taxpayers or when planning would begin. Alderman Nicole Lee, the councilwoman behind the ballot question, said a festival site would help shift the delay and closure of public parks after events like Lollapalooza or Riot Fest. After a particularly rainy Riot Fest concluded in Douglass Park, neighborhood residents complained the park’s grass had been entirely killed and the park was mainly a field of mud. Residents complain each year that the festival ruins the park, but Riot Fest’s organizers say they bear the costs of restoring the park. This year, restoration began two days after the festival concluded, and the festival’s founder, “Riot” Mike Petryshyn said it cost them between $400,000 and $600,000.
