8-year-old Killed in Fiery Crash on Route 55 in South Jersey

Published reports say an 8-year-old died and three other people were hurt in a horrific crash on Route 55 in Gloucester County Saturday afternoon.

NJ.com cited police as saying a driver was "passing vehicles in the center grass median and left shoulder" in Mantua Township around mile marker 53 shortly before 2:00.

The vehicle struck another car, lost control, crashed into an overpass, and burst into flames.

One child and two adults were sent to an area hospital; their conditions were not immediately available.

Crews spent six hours clearing and investigating the scene.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released.
