Airport runway improvements, endurance horse riding in Vedauwoo, Gordon takes on property tax values
Greetings, and how is it already a Thursday for this week? Time sure does seem to scoot along fast in our busy community. Today's Boomerang's newsletter for today is highlighted with the Albany County Commission giving an unanimous nod for the Laramie Regional Airport to accept a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grant agreement for runway improvements. It is also the first step for an overall improvement project at the airport to move forward with more design work associated with a larger apron reconstruction project planned for 2027. Also featured in our popular outdoors section is Amber Travsky's preview of how the Vedauwoo Recreation Area east of Laramie will become the site for the Happy Jack Equestrian Endurance Ride this weekend. Another hot topic courtesy of WyoFile is Gov. Mark Gordon filing a lawsuit to force the State Board of Equalization to certify residential property tax values after the panel concluded recently it could not do so due to disparities created by a 2024 tax cap. For a special heads-up, with this Friday being a federal holiday for Juneteenth/Freedom Day recognized and observed by the U.S Postal Service, the Boomerang will be producing an e-Edition instead. Proposed childcare setbacks could impact existing Cheyenne horse racing facilities
CHEYENNE — A proposed overhaul of Cheyenne’s zoning regulations for historic horse racing gambling facilities moved forward Monday after receiving a unanimous recommendation for approval from the members of the Cheyenne City Council’s Public Services Committee. The ordinance would create new rules governing where historic horse racing facilities — defined in the proposal as gaming centers — may operate within city limits. Planning and Development Department Director Charles Bloom said the changes would give elected officials greater oversight of future gambling developments while encouraging investment in designated entertainment corridors. Under current regulations, historic horse racing facilities are allowed as conditional uses in several zoning districts, with approval decisions made by the city’s Board of Adjustment. The proposed ordinance would establish a new special-use approval process, requiring City Council involvement for many future locations. Bloom told committee members the ordinance would amend several sections of the city’s Unified Development Code, including provisions related to nonconforming uses, zoning definitions, zoning map interpretation and special-use approvals. One of the most significant changes would require existing historic horse racing facilities that are not located within newly designated entertainment overlay districts to seek reapproval from the governing body by Dec. 31, 2027. Bloom said the
