Apple picking in NY: 4 orchards worth the fall trip

New York is the second-largest apple-producing state in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with tens of thousands of acres devoted to apple production across the Empire State. New York produces millions of bushels of apples annually, and many orchards offer visitors the chance to buy pre-picked apples or pick their own straight from the tree. Some orchards offer more than a traditional U-pick experience to attract visitors, with family-friendly activities including wagon rides, yard games, playgrounds, fresh-baked goods and other social media-worthy fall treats. Here are four favorite apple-picking spots across New York, all of which offer additional activities: Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards This family-owned and operated orchard in Lafayette, Onondaga County, has repeatedly been selected by USA TODAY readers as the top orchard in the nation, most recently topping the list in 2024. The orchard also operates a distillery, tasting room and tavern, bakery, general store and kids' area with a variety of activities. It regularly hosts concerts as part of its popular summer concert series at the 1911 Tasting Room. Beak & Skiff is open daily. Pick-your-own requires a wagon ride to the orchard, which runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to consumer health researchers at Innerbody , nearly 195 million Americans drink coffee at least once a week, and at least two-thirds of American adults drink an average of 2.8 cups of coffee a day. Innerbody analyzed coffee-related search trends across all 50 states to determine how interested residents were in coffee. Here’s how New York compares with the rest of the country. What do America's coffee habits look like? Kansas, California and New York ranked among the states with the strongest interest in coffee. Kansas came out on top, with the highest number and frequency of coffee-related searches. Unlike the other top-ranked states, Kansas had more searches related to brewing coffee at home, including queries for personal coffee grinders, coffee makers, espresso beans and how to make a latte. Innerbody said Kansas’ search results reflect a more traditional American coffee habit of preparing at least the first

Are You Ready for Fall Bird Migration?

Fall migration is heating up. Shorebirds are already on the move, heading south from their summer breeding grounds in the arctic. Songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, and more will soon follow, with migration peaking in September-October. More birds are on the move in the fall, as young birds are making their first trip south. Most of the birds headed south in August are adult birds who have made the journey south before. Identifying birds, particularly shorebirds and songbirds, can be easier in August or early September as most adults are still in full breeding plumage. However, as the weeks go on and more juveniles pass through New York State, it becomes harder to identify by sight and sound.
