NY rejects Hudson Valley solar farm opposed by Trump administration

New York state has nixed a controversial plan to put solar panels on 215 acres of farmland in a Hudson Valley town, a victory for local opponents whose decade-long battle got a boost from key figures in the Trump administration this year. The state’s Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES) and Electric Transmission on Oct. 14 denied Hecate Energy a permit for its Shepherd’s Run project in the town of Copake in Columbia County, two and a half hours north of New York City. The 42-megawatt project would generate power for 9,500 homes. The ruling by ORES interim executive director Jason Zehr found Chicago-based Hecate’s application failed to fully address the adverse environmental impacts on wetlands and state-mandated floodplain protections for local towns. “Weighing the full record of evidence presented in this case showed that the application did not meet the criteria for permit issuance,” Zehr said. While modest in size, Shepherd’s Run became a referendum of sorts on New York’s efforts to add more renewable energy upstate as it works to clean a downstate grid largely reliant on fossil fuels, a dependency exacerbated by the 2021 shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear power plant. New York’s climate goals —

25 Historic Hudson Valley Estates and Mansions With Remarkable Stories

The Hudson Valley has been home to some of New York’s most remarkable country houses for more than three centuries. Long before the Gilded Age brought railroad fortunes, elaborate gardens, and grand weekend retreats to the river, colonial landowning families were establishing farms, trading centers, and estates along its banks. The Hudson was both a transportation route and a source of wealth. Land, agriculture, river commerce, and the labor of enslaved people and tenant farmers helped sustain the households that later became known for their imposing mansions.

The Mamdani-Hochul pied-à-terre tax is based on a fatal flaw

The unfolding court drama over New York City’s pied-à-terre tax isn’t just about billionaires. It’s about fundamental rights of all Americans. New York’s Democratic Party is trashing those rights and violating the legal principles that underpin America’s successful economy in order to finance their socialist spending spree. Between elections, we must go to court in defense of these rights and fight hard. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Kathy Hochul and Kamar H. Samuels attend an event to bring NYC Public Schools procurement into the 21st century in New York, Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026. Camara Porter/AdMedia/MediaPunch/Shutterstock On Tuesday, New York State Supreme Court Judge Wayne Ozzi ruled that Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rollout of the pied-à-terre tax deprived homeowners of their due process rights. The city had notified some 17,000 house- and apartment-owners that they owed the tax and had a mere 30 days to prove otherwise — or be hit with hefty penalties. It was flipping the burden of proof onto homeowners to show their property is their primary residence and exempt from the tax. Yikes! Guilty until proven innocent. Legal trouble for Mamdani’s pied-à-terre tax is just beginning Ozzi ordered the city to redo the rollout, this time honoring property owners’ due-process
