Site inspector hit and killed while working on Thruway

The incident happened in the westbound lanes between the Batavia and Pembroke exits.

GENESEE COUNTY, N.Y. — New York State Police are investigating a deadly crash that happened on the Thruway Wednesday morning.

State Police said the accident happened just before 5:40 a.m. in a work zone in the westbound lanes of I-90 between Exit 48 (Batavia) and Exit 48A (Pembroke). The report came in that a pedestrian was hit by a construction truck in a work zone.

Police said a dump truck driven by Marc P. Pennacchio, 49, contracted by Diamond Concrete, started backing up within the work zone, when the site inspector from Patriot Engineering & Surveying, Brett K. Decker, 45,  walked into the right lane behind the truck and was hit.

Decker was pronounced dead at the scene by Genesee County Medical Examiner.

The crash is still under investigation the NYSP said.
