FRIENDSVILLE — The Hoppers 4-H Club meeting was called to order by President Isabel Whiteside, and there were 16 members, 15 volunteers and one guest. The guest was Kevin Dodge, director of Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology at Garrett College.
He gave an interesting presentation on amphibians, salamanders and reptiles, including many animal sounds and funny stories. We thank him for coming to teach us about some of our native Garrett County species.
Darlene Schmidt led a new game called Switch, which was a quiz and learning experience for everyone.
The secretary’s minutes were read by Julia Reckart and approved, and the treasurer’s report was read by Jeremy Gordon and approved.
The Western Maryland District Show was discussed. Bristal Ketterman and Isabel Whiteside both gave reports on their experiences. Some other members who showed animals were Jacob Vose, Jeremy Gordon, Elizabeth Zimmerman, Cheyanne McClean, Ava Cosner and Derek Cosner. It was a great learning experience.
The Rabbit Show Committee continued to work on plans for next month’s show being held at the fairgrounds. It is open to all youth, 4-H and adults. Pre-registration is due by June 16. Food will be provided by the Hoppers Club.
Flowers will be planted at the Friendsville Senior Center soon. A few volunteers are planning to do it next week.
The club has scheduled a bowling trip, farm tours and a rabbit barn cleanup. A booth for the fair was discussed. Members were asked to work on keeping Service Learning Forms up to date.
The Clovers painted a ceramic rabbit, which they can enter in the fair this year.
Avian Flu testing will be held July 10 at the fairgrounds, with pre-registration needed. If any 4-H kids want to participate in the Fashion Revue at the fair, forms can be found on the Extension website.
The Hoppers Rabbit Show will be held June 24 at the fairgrounds starting at 9 a.m. We hope you’ll HOP HOP HOP on over and have a fun day with us!
