DCSO: Carjacking suspects also suspects in Dresslerville homicide

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (KOLO) - Update at 3:14 p.m.: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is releasing new details about a carjacking in Gardnerville Tuesday morning.

They say that two individuals, one pointing a gun, attempted to take a vehicle getting gas at the Smith’s. The suspects were unable to start the car and fled on foot.

Police identified the suspects as 30-year-old Derek Melendez from Wadsworth, Nevada and 40-year-old Niquoia Lundy from Markleeville, California. They were located in a neighborhood east of the Smith’s and were arrested.

Melendez and Lundy were booked into the Douglas County Jail. Police later learned the pair were suspects in a homicide that had occurred earlier Tuesday morning on the Dresslerviile Colony of Washoe Tribe.

The DCSO is assisting the Washoe Tribal Police and the FBI with their investigation.

Melendez has been charged with robbery, battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and conspiracy. His bail was set at $125,655.

Lundy has been charged with robbery, battery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy. His bail was set at $125,015.

They say around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, an attempted carjacking took place at the Smith’s in Gardnerville. Deputies arrived and spoke with the victim and witnesses who gave descriptions of the suspects and the direction they traveled.

DCSO deputies found the suspects walking on El Dorado Ave. near Apollo Ave. in Gardnerville. They were taken into custody without incident and no injuries were reported.

They say no outstanding suspects remain. No information about the suspects was released, but the DCSO says more information will be released at a later time.
