Man arrested for impersonating a police officer before robbing woman on Long Island

GARDEN CITY PARK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Police arrested a man on Long Island for impersonating a police officer before robbing her on Thursday morning, authorities said.

At about 9 a.m., a 44-year-old woman was walking eastbound on 4th Street in Garden City Park when Alif Chowdhury, 33, presented what appeared to be a badge and stated that he was a police officer, Nassau County officials said.

According to detectives, Chowdhury began to verbally yell at the victim then forcefully grabbed a phone from her hand before attempting to restrain her.

The victim was able to flee the scene and contact Nassau County Police.

No injuries were reported at scene.

Following an investigation, Chowdhury was located at his place of residence and placed under arrest without further incident.

Chowdhury was charged with robbery and criminal impersonation of a police officer.

He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
