GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Glenroy Lake, 53, was arrested early this morning and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly hitting his girlfriend with a machete and running out of the home naked.
At about 12:54 a.m., Gainesville Police Department officers responded to a call from the victim, who said she had been living with Lake for about four months and that he wanted her to leave and pulled her by the hair while she was getting dressed. She said he picked up an 18-inch machete with a flat-point tip and raised it; she put her hands up to defend herself, and Lake allegedly hit her in the hand with the machete. She walked outside to wait for law enforcement and was treated at the scene for a minor laceration on a finger. She told officers that Lake was naked and exhibiting bizarre and erratic behavior.
Officers responded and established a perimeter around the residence. An officer reportedly found Lake in the backyard of a nearby home, naked and acting bizarrely.
Post Miranda, Lake reportedly said the victim had been arguing with him, so he started packing her belongings; he said she picked up a kitchen knife, but he continued to pack her belongings. He said the victim called 911, and he ran out of the home and hid in a neighbor’s backyard when he heard sirens nearby. The officer reported that Lake was uncooperative and kept yelling that he wanted the victim out of the home.
An officer reportedly found a machete in a bedroom and a kitchen knife in the grass on the front lawn with fresh blood on its handle. The victim reportedly said she had picked up the knife after she left the home because she did not know whether Lake was following her.
Lake has eight felony convictions (none violent) and 15 misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2006. He has an active warrant out of Miami-Dade County for burglary of an occupied dwelling, petit theft, and property damage. Prosecutors told the judge they intend to file for pre-trial detention without bail, and Judge Thomas Jaworski ordered Lake held without bail until that hearing.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
