In 2022 a team of cyclists completed a 500-mile journey across California to raise funds and awareness for mental health and substance abuse recovery.

Dubbed the “Tour de Recovery,” the event hosted by TURN Behavioral Health Services returns this Sunday with an event in Fresno.

This year, riders will embark on another ride through the Central Valley, officially starting at the TURN Behavioral Health Services location at the old Hacienda hotel, located at 2550 W. Clinton Ave, and ending in Oceanside.

The 8 a.m. event will feature music, speakers and community resources, with an emphasis on reducing stigma often associated with mental health and substance use recovery.

At the end of the ceremony, cyclists from the Fresno community will be invited to support the team by taking part of the Fresno portion of the ride on their way to the next stop in Bakersfield.

TURN Behavioral Health Services board member Cork Snider and educator Rick Burns were part of the first Tour de Recovery event, according to a news release.

“We are grateful to Cork and Rick for undertaking this endurance ride to shine a light on the hope and possibility offered by our services for those challenged by substance use and mental

health issues,” said James Callaghan, TURN CEO. “As a leading provider of innovative and cost-effective behavioral health programs, we look forward to continuing our good work and are grateful for the support of the Fresno community.”

About $63,000 has been raised for this year’s event, with a goal of $250,000, according to the website. Anyone wishing to support the cause can visit to make a donation.

TURN is a nonprofit organization that offers community-based health clinics, residential treatment for women and children, outpatient services, diversion, and vocational programs. It employs more than 900 people at over 80 behavioral health and housing problems spanning 10 California counties.
