Mayor Jerry Dyer and Fresno City Council President Tyler Maxwell hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first completed phase of the new Paul “Cap” Caprioglio Community Center in Fresno.

The new center is located in the El Dorado Park neighborhood at the corner of Bulldog Ln. and Sixth St.

The center is named after former District 4 Councilmember Paul Caprioglio.

“The addition of the Paul Caprioglio Community Center is just the latest investment into the El Dorado Park neighborhood” said Council President Tyler Maxwell. “This community had long been defined by its high crime and low socio-economic status. However, many years of investment from neighbors and the City have transformed this community into something really special."

I think it’s safe to say that “Sin City” is dead and the El Dorado Park neighborhood is alive and thriving.

The building was previously occupied by businesses and medical offices.

Renovations converted the building into a new community center that will provide a multi-generational space for children and seniors.

The new center will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Amenities include a gaming and technology station equipped with 6 gaming laptops and a 3-D printer, arcade-style games, including shuffleboard, an infinity game table, a basketball shoot-out, a pool table, and a dedicated senior lounge with an exercise station and crafting zone.

“It is an honor to recognize a man who served our city well during his time on the City Council,” said Mayor Jerry Dyer. “Paul Caprioglio was the voice of calm and reason as a Councilmember and he always put the community first when making decisions."

Paul’s dream of creating a multi-generational community center was a driving force behind the creation of The Cap Center.

“I am truly humbled by this honor of having a community center named after me,” said former Councilmember Paul Caprioglio. “It was a large team effort by many people with a common goal of serving the people of District 4 with a true community center for all ages, a multi-generational center.”

Social activities and exercise classes for seniors such as aerobics, tai chi, and yoga will be available in the morning with programs for youth including mentoring, art programs, 3-D printing, gardening, coding, and homework assistance will occur in the afternoon.

The second phase of the renovation is tentatively scheduled to begin construction by the end of the year.

Phase two is planned for a second building next to the new center.

They will be joined by former District 4 Councilmember Paul Caprioglio, Stone Soup, Wesley United Methodist Church, the El Dorado Park CDC, the Fresno PARCS Department, and the Fresno Police Department’s El Dorado Park bike unit.
