Many educators in the Fresno Unified School District feel the district is not doing enough to keep students and staff safe.

Now, the district says it is laying out plans for infrastructure and support across the district next week.

It comes after they say a student ignited a model engine rocket in a Fresno High stairwell Monday, which caused a loud bang and filled the air with smoke.

The district says there is no excuse for this behavior, but “There was no current or continuing danger, no fire, and no damage to the school. A lockdown was not called as there was no threat or danger to the school.”

But not everyone is taking this lightly.

Tuesday, a representative spoke on a teacher’s behalf who says she suffered a concussion from the blast, and that this is just the latest example in a list of troubling incidents.

“The lack of urgency and care is appalling. This was an act of intimidation and terrorism. This is a breach of safety. This is not the job I signed up for. I love my students. My room should be our safe place. But the hell that is Fresno High is destroying humanity, and my drive to be an educator.”

Fresno Unified says the student responsible for lighting the rocket has been identified and that appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.

“We are committed as a district to adapting our safety supports to the current realities our district and others are facing across the nation.”
