A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in southwest Fresno.

According to the Fresno Police Department, a Fresno Police Sergeant and an officer were in the parking lot of the Southwest Policing District Station, near Highway 99 and Tuolumne Street, around 11:00 p.m. when they both noticed a man walking in the parking lot.

The man was near a secured gate of the substation when the sergeant and officer approached the man to see what he was doing.

Police say the man pulled out a large 7-inch knife and held it in his hand as the officers approached.

Authorities gave the man several commands to drop the knife and get on the ground, but the man refused to listen.

A third officer inside the substation heard the two officers’ radio transmission and came out to help.

The two officers and the sergeant gave several more commands to the man, but he still would not comply.

Officers say the man then walked straight toward them and made an aggressive movement with the large knife in hand.

All three officers fired their department service weapons, striking the suspect.

Life-saving measures were performed immediately and the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has been identified as 33-year-old Coy Brent Jackson.

All three officers that were involved have been placed on routine administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting.

Chief of Police, Paco Balderrama says,

Although it is early in the investigation, it is probable the deceased person was suffering from mental health issues. The loss of life is always a tragedy, but even more so when persons suffering from mental illness are unable to get assistance for their condition. This puts them, the public, and the police in danger when confronted by an unresponsive, desperate person, who in this case was armed with a knife and advanced at officers. As a state and a community, we must do better.
