Multiple people exposed to pepper spray at beauty store in Frederick

FREDERICK, Md. (DC News Now) — The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were investigating an armed robbery that happened at the Frederick Crossing Shopping Center on Sunday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Chuck Jenkins with the FCSO, two women suspects went into the store wearing masks and began to loot. Once they were confronted by workers, they fled the scene — but not before releasing pepper spray, which prompted an evacuation and hazmat response.

“This has become an occurrence not so much in Frederick County but in other jurisdictions, we don’t want it here, we’re not going to tolerate it here. We’re going to figure out a strategy to try and stop this at Frederick County retail locations,” Jenkins said.

While one person was treated at the scene, Jenkins said more people were exposed in the store.

“It contaminated the entire store. We had about 30 people exposed mildly to the O.C. Spray (pepper spray),” Jenkins said.

Deputies continue to search for the two individuals.

“They fled. They got away in a gold minivan with Virginia tags,” Jenkins said.

Ulta Beauty released a statement that said, “The safety of our associates and guests are always our highest priority. We can confirm there was an incident at the Ulta Beauty in Frederick, Maryland. We’re working with local law enforcement as the investigation continues.”

Police are unsure of exactly how much the suspects got away with. Jenkins said he thinks they may be connected to another robbery case in a neighboring county.
