FRANKLIN - A Williamstown man was jailed after allegedly punching a man at a Little League game here.

Dillon Smith, 30, is accused of hitting a 54-year-old Franklinville man during a dispute over a call on the field on Tuesday evening, according to Franklin police.

Smith allegedly approached the victim around 8:10 p.m., following a major division playoff game at the league’s Pennsylvania Avenue complex, said a police account.

Smith fled in a vehicle after striking the man in the face, police alleged.

However, a spectator provided information about his vehicle and police arrested Smith at his home.

The victim was treated at the scene and later went to a hospital for treatment of facial injuries, police said.

Smith was being held Wednesday in Salem County Jail on a charge of simple assault at a youth sporting event.

The charge against Smith is only an allegation. He has not been convicted in the case.

Simple assault becomes a fourth-degree felony in New Jersey "when it is in the presence of children under the age of 16 at a community sponsored youth sporting event," police said.

The league serves children from ages 4 to 16, according to its website.
