Up the Creek: The local correspondent
Every town needs a fire department. Passable roads are important, and a post office is a nice thing to have. But I’d argue that there’s one civic need that we rarely think about. If a town is to really flourish, it needs a journalist — a writer who tells the town’s stories and sees its beauty and, when it’s needed, spells out how screwed up things are in town.
