The high school boys hockey players who were named 2024 Daily News All-Stars

After combing over statistics and results, and with the guidance of local athletic directors and coaches, we at the Daily News selected All-Stars for boys and girls basketball , boys and girls hockey, boys and girls swimming , boys and girls track and field , gymnastics , skiing and boys and girls wrestling .

Although the sports and skill sets may vary, there’s no denying that this group put up otherworldly numbers this winter while helping their respective teams find success – whether that be on the court, field, ice, mat or track, or in the gym or pool.

The Daily News presents its 2023-24 All-Stars for boys hockey:

Noah Albright, Framingham

This senior and returning Daily News All-Star made the most of his four varsity seasons at Framingham, finishing his career with 88 points (38 goals, 50 assists) and a second straight Bay State Conference All-Star nod. The Cahoon Cup MVP and two-year captain had 16 goals and 10 assists this winter. “Exceptional athlete who has the ability to singlehandedly take over a game,” said Flyers coach Dan Riva. “Played in all situations and carried a very thin Framingham offense this season.”

Roman Belli, Marlborough

The senior goalie posted a 2.35 goals against average and a .925 save percentage while backstopping the Panthers to a 10-9-3 finish and a trip to the Division 3 Sweet 16. Belli earned Daily News Cup Tournament MVP and a CMass All-Star selection in the process. “Roman has been outstanding all year long,” said Panthers coach Mike O’Brien. “He gave us an opportunity to win every time we played.” Belli plans to play junior hockey after graduation.

Aiden Collins, Hopedale/Milford

The junior winger scored 18 goals and dished out 16 assists on his way to team MVP and Quinn Conference All-Star honors. “Aiden was our offensive catalyst this season,” said Hopedale/Milford coach Mike MacQuarrie. “He uses his speed to get around players and has a great wrist shot. Some nights he was the best player on the ice and his work ethic is incredible.”

Henry Eaton, Medway

The right wing and team captain was a unanimous Tri-Valley League All-Star, finishing his senior campaign with 16 goals and nine assists to give him 32 tallies and 20 helpers in his three-year varsity career. “Henry is a dangerous open-ice player that can change the game instantly when the puck is on his stick,” said Medway coach Jeff Drake. A varsity soccer and lacrosse player as well, Eaton plans to study business and play club hockey in college.

Andrew Goldstein, Weston

The Weston High senior could not have asked for a more fairytale ending to his or his team’s high school careers. The Tri-Valley League Small MVP ended the magical run hoisting a Division 4 state championship trophy with his Dover-Sherborn/Weston teammates at TD Garden, closing out a season in which he had a 1.48 goals against average, a .944 save percentage and two shutouts. He played 73 games and notched a 2.68 goals against average with a .914 save percentage over four seasons. “Andrew has been everything and more for us,” said D-S/Weston coach Alex Marlow. A 2023 state champion in golf as well, Goldstein will head to the University of Georgia to study business and play for the UGA Ice Dawgs Hockey Club.

James Hayward, Hopkinton

The dynamic sophomore was not slumping this winter, scoring 17 goals with 10 assists to earn Tri-Valley League All-Star and team MVP honors as the Hillers finished 14-5-2. “James had an outstanding year,” said Hillers coach Scott Hayes. “He was strong all over the ice in all situations. His puck possession skills and ability to create plays helped drive our offense this season.” Hayward is also a golf and baseball standout at Hopkinton.

Sam Hinckley, Weston

The junior captain and forward was integral to Dover-Sherborn/Weston raising the Division 4 state championship trophy, scoring 12 goals and dishing out 20 assists with a plus-13 on his way to Tri-Valley League All-Star honors in his third varsity season. “Each year it has been incredible to watch (Sam’s) game grow,” said D-S/Weston coach Alex Marlow. “He has every tool you could need as a hockey player and is a pleasure to coach.” A National Honor Society member, Hinckley is also a standout midfielder for the Weston lacrosse team.

Sam Hubbard, Natick

The junior forward his coach considers “a top 10 player in Mass. high school hockey today” potted 18 goals with 12 assists in just 15 games before an injury ended his season, a torrid two points-per-game clip. That total put him second in the Bay State Conference in scoring and earned him first-team BSC All-Star honors. “One of the best HS hockey players I have coached in my 20 years,” said coach Karl Infanger. “He can shoot, stickhandle, hit – he is the total package.”  Hubbard is a standout football player as well, earning a Daily News All-Star nod as a linebacker.

Steven Jackson, Hopkinton

The junior goalie backstopped the Hillers to the Division 2 state tournament, posting a .928 save percentage and a 2.21 goals against average while going 11-3-2. Jackson had three shutouts and was named a Tri-Valley League All-Star. “Steven was incredible in net for us this season,” said Hillers coach Scott Hayes. “We won a lot of close games and Steven was a huge reason for those successes.”

Anthony Lampasona, Franklin

The senior left wing and assistant captain earned his second straight Hockomock League all-star nod, netting 16 goals with 18 assists to cap a three-year varsity career that included 36 goals and 53 assists (89 points). His line that included Ben Paterson at center and Dylan McEvoy at right wing was what coach Chris Spillane called “one of the most explosive lines in the state.” Lampasona is also a lacrosse midfielder for the Panthers.

Joe Lozoraitis, Tahanto

A three-time Russell Conference and Central Mass. All-Star, this senior scored 15 goals with 20 assists to earn team MVP honors for the Hudson co-op this winter and finished his high school career with 30 goals and 43 assists for 73 points. “Complete two-way player,” said Hawks coach Mike Nanartowich. “Logs the hard minutes against another team's best players. A true leader both on and off ice.” A National Honor Society member, Lozoraitis plays baseball for Tahanto.

Matthew Mahoney, Lincoln-Sudbury

Making his return to the Daily News All-Star team, this senior captain and defenseman was again a blue-line stalwart for the Warriors. The four-year varsity player earned a third straight Dual County League All-Star nod while scoring three goals and dishing out six assists. “Matt was a great leader,” said L-S coach David Marinofsky. “He gave it 100% every game and was a game changer in key games.” A pitcher for the L-S, Mahoney will head to Colby and play baseball while studying economics.

Joe Manzi, Blackstone Valley Tech

This two-time Central Mass. All-Star scored 11 goals and dished out 13 assists for 24 points as the Beavers went 18-4 and reached the Division 3 Round of 32 in just their second year as a standalone program. “Joe was asked to play both defense and forward over the past two years as well as in all situations and exceled on all fronts,” said BVT coach Turk Chambless. A member of the Worcester Jr. Railers Elite club, Manzi also enjoys fishing and golfing and is working toward obtaining his electrician license.

Logan Marchand, Franklin

This senior defenseman and two-time Hockomock League all-star scored six goals with 18 assists to finish his three-year varsity career with 15 goals and 34 assists from the blue line while helping the Panthers reach the Division 1 state quarterfinals. “Logan was an offensive-minded defensemen who loved to play physical,” said Franklin coach Chris Spillane. A club hockey player for Walpole Express, Marchand will head to Merrimack College in the fall, where he plans to study criminal justice and play club hockey.

Luc Masse, Advanced Math and Science Academy

The senior defenseman for the Marlborough co-op led the Panthers with 11 goals and dished out nine assists on his way to Central Mass. All-Star honors. Masse was a two-year captain for coach Mike O’Brien’s Panthers. “Luc has been an outstanding four-year player for us,” said O’Brien. “He has been one of the top defensemen in Central Mass. Luc’s leadership on and off the ice is going to be missed.” Masse is also a lacrosse standout for AMSA, recently recording his 100 th career point.

Dylan McEvoy, Franklin

The senior right wing and assistant captain scored 18 goals with 14 assists on his way to a Hockomock League All-Star nod as the Panthers reached the Division 1 state quarterfinals. McEvoy finished his three-year varsity career with 30 goals and 26 assists on a line with Ben Paterson at center and Anthony Lampasona at left wing that coach Chris Spillane called “one of the most explosive lines in the state.” A three-year varsity lacrosse player as well, McEvoy plans to play club hockey and study finance in college.

Brayden McKenna, Dover-Sherborn

The junior forward from D-S scored 16 goals with 19 assists (35 points) and was a plus-29 on his way to a Tri-Valley League All-Star nod for the Division 4 state champions. He has scored 31 goals with 23 assists in his high school career. “Brayden is a player that played top-six minutes the second he arrived as a freshman,” said D-S/Weston coach Alex Marlow. “He has always been one of the most talented players on the ice, but this season he put up the numbers to back it up. One of the strongest, fastest and talented players I have ever had the pleasure to coach.” McKenna will be a team captain in 2024-25.

Connor Merkle, Hopkinton

Talk about making a sound first impression. This freshman forward burst on the scene, scoring 11 goals and dishing out 11 assists as he was named a Tri-Valley League All-Star and earned the team’s Seventh Player Award. “Connor had an incredibly strong season,” said Hillers coach Scott Hayes. “His leap into high school hockey was seamless and he provided excellent play in all situations.” A member of the Boston Jr. Terriers U16 Elite team, Merkle plays lacrosse and also enjoys fishing, traveling and weight lifting.

Owen Nanartowich, Hudson

The junior defenseman went from a Mid-Wach C All-Star nod in football to being a Russell Conference and Central Mass All-Star on the ice, holding down the blue line for the Hawks as a returning captain. While playing upwards of 35 to 40 minutes a game, Nanartowich scored three goals with 13 assists this winter to bring his career totals to four goals and 24 helpers. “Speed and physicality are key components to his overall game,” said Hudson coach Mike Nanartowich of his son. “Owen never gives less than 100% at both practice and games. A true leader both on and off ice.”

Ben Paterson, Franklin

This returning Daily News All-Star and senior captain saved his best for last in a Panthers uniform, scoring 28 goals with 28 assists (56 points) to earn his second straight Hockomock League MVP honor. Paterson finished his three-year varsity career with 55 goals and 64 assists, leading the Panthers into the Division 1 state quarterfinals this winter. Paterson is also a standout midfielder for the Franklin lacrosse team.

Lukas Sobczak, Tri-County

The senior captain and team MVP led the Cougars with 15 goals and 16 assists this winter, helping them reach the Division 4 state tournament on his way to his third straight Mayflower League All-Star honors. A volunteer at Rhode Island Special Hockey who has played for Canadian Hockey Club as well as Walpole Express, Sobczak hopes to work in carpentry while playing junior hockey next year. “A true leader on and off the ice,” said Tri-County coach Stephen Smith. “The perfect team captain.”

Christian Stevens, Hudson

This senior forward was once again a dynamic presence for the Hawks, finding the net 19 times with 11 assists (30 points) in his final winter in the red and white. He finished his high school career with 44 goals and 31 assists (75 points). “Speed, hands and shot make Christian one of Hudson’s best players,” said coach Mike Nanartowich. “The vision to create for himself and others makes him a complete player.”
