Sacramento coroner reveals cause of mass shooting suspect’s death

(FOX40.COM) — Smiley Martin, who died in jail while awaiting his trial for his role in Sacramento’s K Street shooting in 2022 , died from a drug overdose, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

On Wednesday, the coroner confirmed methadone toxicity as Martin’s official cause of death, which occurred on the morning of June 8.

A little over two weeks ago, Smiley Martin’s charges stemming from the mass shooting were dismissed by prosecutors who said they could not continue the case against a dead person “in the interest of justice.”

The K Street shooting, which killed six people and injured 12 more on the morning of April 3, 2022, is considered one of the deadliest shootings in Sacramento’s history.

The two remaining suspects facing charges related to the incident are Mtula Payton and Dandrae Martin.
