FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Multiple people were taken to a hospital after two Citilink buses and an SUV were involved in a crash just south of downtown Fort Wayne Wednesday afternoon. One of the passengers was in life-threatening condition, according to a public information officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department.

The crash happened at the intersection of South Clinton and East Wallace just after 1 p.m.

Based on initial information, police believe a Citilink bus was southbound on Clinton and possibly ran the red light at Wallace, hitting the other bus coming through the intersection. The initial impact caused one of the buses to collide with a stopped black SUV on Wallace, and the other bus to hit a gas line, causing a leak. 

The woman on the smaller bus who was in life-threatening condition is still in serious condition at the hospital, police told WANE 15 in an update Friday.

It’s not known if the drivers of the three vehicles were hurt or if there were passengers in the SUV.

The crash snarled traffic in the area and caused backups on Clinton as crews from NIPSCO and Fort Wayne City Utilities made repairs and fixed the gas leak. NIPSCO said one lane of S. Clinton Street would be closed for the night to fix a gas meter.

Police at the scene were using drones and RTK poles to mark coordinates and further investigate the crash.

“Citilink thanks the public for their patience as the investigation is ongoing,” the company said in a statement. “The safety of passengers and staff are always Citilink’s top priority.”
