FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/FOX24) — Authorities are urging Kia Soul owners to remain vigilant following a surge in thefts targeting the popular vehicle model across the nation.

Law enforcement is actively investigating at least one incident in Fort Smith.

While details of the ongoing investigation remain confidential, officials are stressing the importance of proactive measures to safeguard vehicles from potential theft.

In light of the recent cases, authorities recommend the following precautions:

    1. Park in well-lit areas: Opt for parking spots in well-lit and populated areas whenever possible to deter thieves.

    2. Use anti-theft devices: Employ visible anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks or brake locks as an added layer of security.

    3. Install a security system: Consider installing aftermarket alarm systems or GPS tracking devices if your vehicle lacks built-in security features.

    4. Lock Doors and Windows: Always ensure that doors and windows are securely locked when leaving the vehicle unattended to prevent unauthorized access.

Authorities emphasize the significance of these preventive measures in deterring thefts. “Flipping handles” remains a common method used by thieves to gain entry to vehicles, underscoring the importance of securing doors and windows.

Vehicle owners are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts is encouraged to contact the Fort Smith Police Department at 479-709-5000.
