Woman killed in rural crash

PUNTA GORDA — A woman was killed in a crash along U.S. 31 and Bermont Road on Friday afternoon.

According to a news release from Florida Highway Patrol, a 59-year-old Fort Myers woman was driving an SUV westbound on Bermont Road while a 24-year-old Wadsworth, Illinois man was driving a pickup truck with a trailer northbound on U.S. 31 on Friday.

The woman in the SUV “failed to stop for a red traffic signal,” according to the report.

The SUV struck the side of the pickup truck when she drove it through the intersection.

The pickup truck entered a water-filled ditch, it noted.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The crash remains under investigation,” it stated.
