Detectives say they've arrested the person responsible for fatally shooting a man and wounding another.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office said Leronte Smith, 34, opened fire at a bus bench from a black Mercedes on Monday, Jan. 9 at around 2:39 a.m.
When deputies arrived to the location on N.W. 27th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale the car had already fled the area. First responders found two men that were struck by the bullets. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue pronounced one man dead at the scene, the other man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Detectives said they were able to connect Smith to the shooting and an arrest warrant was issued on Jan. 13 . However, it wasn't until Friday, March 3, that detectives were able to locate Smith.
The sheriff's office said Smith was arrested and charged with murder in the first degree with a firearm and attempted murder in the first degree with a firearm. He was taken to the Broward County Main Jail where he is being held without bond.
