CHEROKEE COUNTY — A teen died, and two went to the hospital after a car wreck near Hulbert, Ok. on Dec. 5.

Just after 7 p.m., three teenage boys from Fort Gibson were involved in a single-car wreck. A 16-year-old was driving a Ford Escape with two 15-year-old passengers.

15-year-old Isaih Atwood passed away at the scene of the crash. The 16-year-old driver was flown to a Tulsa hospital via helicopter. The other 15-year-old went to the hospital via ambulance in stable condition.

Atwood was a sophomore at Fort Gibson Public Schools, according to Superintendent Scott Farmer.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol hasn't released the cause of the crash or what happened.

Remnants of the vehicle were still there on Wednesday. A mailbox was on the ground. The road still had tire marks. Part of the asphalt was torn.

The tight-knit community of Fort Gibson was feeling heavy on Wednesday. Most people were speechless.

2 News spoke with a woman who didn't want to show her face on camera. She lives just a few yards away from the crash.

"Since they have paved the road, it makes it a lot smoother and easier to drive on. However, people drive very fast up and down through here," she said.

The road also has deep bar ditches on both sides.

2 News called Fort Gibson Schools Superintendant Scott Farmer, and he says he communicated with staff early Wednesday morning. He said counselors went through every classroom talking through the tragedy with them, and they're offering a wide array of support for struggling students and staff.
