Raleigh Approves GoRaleigh Station Study
Following ongoing concerns over the state of GoRaleigh’s Moore Square bus station, plans are now in motion to rethink DTR transit. At its Oct. 6 meeting, City Council approved a Mobility Hubs Study that will examine potential improvements to the existing station—or whether a new DTR facility or decentralized approach makes more sense. Consultant WSP USA Inc. will evaluate up to three strategies: improving the existing GoRaleigh station through crime prevention and environmental design; identifying alternative Downtown locations; and exploring a distributed facility model. The broader study will also look into Raleigh’s hub-and-spoke network versus grid system, including opportunities for cross-town connections that bypass Downtown altogether. The City of Raleigh Department of Transportation expects to return to Council with initial recommendations in six to nine months.

New lights brighten a stretch of an otherwise dark Interstate 440 in Raleigh
Driving on Interstate 440 around Raleigh at night can be a little disorienting. The highway is six or eight lanes wide, often filled with traffic you’d expect in the state’s second-largest city, but for most of its length, I-440 is as dark as any country road. That has changed along a four-mile stretch of the highway on the west side of town, where lights now shine down on the pavement between Lake Boone Trail and Cary. When the N.C. Department of Transportation widened this section of the Beltline , it installed lights on poles in the median and on tall masts at the interchanges. This bright stretch of I-440 will likely remain an anomaly for a while. NCDOT tends to install lights only as part of a major construction project, and only one of those is planned along the Beltline in the foreseeable future, at Wake Forest Road starting in late 2029 . The newly illuminated section of the Beltline reflects NCDOT’s changing approach to highway lights, said Greg Hall, who leads the lighting and electrical design team. Years ago, it was up to local engineers to determine when and where to install lights, Hall said, and when what is

The South’s Rail Revival: Faster Trains Take Shape as Gulf Coast Ridership Beats Forecasts
A faster train ride between Raleigh and Richmond moved closer this month with a $550 million federal commitment. Farther south, passengers are already providing a test of what a restored rail connection can do: Amtrak’s New Orleans–Mobile service approached 150,000 trips around its first anniversary, nearly twice its initial forecast.

Road project took a Raleigh neighborhood's only traffic light. Gridlock ensued.
The city temporarily closed Pearl Road where it meets Rock Quarry and Barwell roads so contractors could bring sanity and logic to an off-kilter intersection. But some residents say the closure has resulted in dangerous chaos in the meantime. Pearl was closed at Rock Quarry earlier this week as contractors begin the work of moving it about 150 feet to line up with Barwell Road. Pearl Road is expected to reopen by Christmas, when what had been two adjoining intersections will become one. But the closure means the loss, however temporary, of the only traffic light that people living in hundreds of homes off Pearl Road used to get in and out of their neighborhood. Detour signs send residents to the other end of Pearl Road, near the Shoppes at Battle Bridge shopping center, but many are using the only other route in and out, a narrow residential street called Laurel Glen Drive. “I think people are choosing whatever path they think they can make it out on,” said Jason Boniello, who lives in the Pearl Ridge subdivision. “Which to me is very dangerous, especially with Rock Quarry Road where cars go really fast around those bends on a normal

Gardner Street Fails Raleigh's Speed Bump Test, Wins Stop Sign Instead
Christina Jepson says Gardner Street can feel like a racetrack on some days, with no speed bumps and no roundabouts to slow drivers weaving along the curved road between Hillsborough Street and Wade Avenue. She wants the city to install speed bumps, roundabouts, or additional stop signs before someone gets hurt, but a recent city traffic assessment found the street doesn't yet meet the numbers needed to qualify.

A Raleigh road is closed while the city fixes an off-kilter intersection
There may have been a time when the cockeyed intersection of Pearl, Rock Quarry and Barwell roads made sense, but with this corner of southeast Raleigh filling fast with homes, that time is long past. So the city closed Pearl Road where it meets Rock Quarry on Monday so that contractors can move it about 150 feet to line up with Barwell Road. Pearl Road is expected to reopen at Rock Quarry by Christmas, when what has been two adjoining intersections will become one. The work is part of a larger project to transform a mile of Barwell Road north of Rock Quarry from what was a country road into a suburban street lined with homes and subdivisions. The city is adding a center lane for left turns, new bus stops and a 6-foot sidewalk on one side and a 10-foot path on the other. There will also be five new crosswalks, and the speed limit will be lowered from 45 to 35 mph. Construction began in the summer of 2025 and is expected to be finished by next fall. Pearl is a loop road, meeting Rock Quarry in two places. While the intersection near Barwell Road is closed, traffic
