FBHS Track team shines at North Coast Conference meet

FORT BRAGG, CA — On Saturday, May 13, at the North Coast Conference Track and Field event at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, the Fort Bragg High School Varsity team spent the day racking personal bests and scoring two first places. Forty-two teams from multiple divisions, including some from the Bay Area and Sonoma and Napa Counties, met to determine the season’s NCS Class A Championship rankings.

The team came home with two first-place showings in Girls discus and Boys pole vault and a second place in Girls shot put, capping the multiple personal bests throughout the day’s competition.

For the Varsity Girls, three seniors had a good showing. Samantha Britton-Dalson came in first in the discus with 111-06 and second in the 4 kg shot put. Caroline Comer came in twelfth in the 100 meters, tenth in the 200 meters, and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 18.31. Jenna Curti came in second place in the pole vault and fourteenth in the 100 meters with a personal best of 13.68.

Two juniors placed well.  Avery Epperson came in fifth in the 4 kg shot put with a personal best of 31-05.50 and twelfth in the discus. Carmen Velasquez came in twelfth in the 100-meter hurdles, fourteenth in the 300-meter hurdles, and fifteenth in the long jump. Sophomore Lillian Bailey came in tenth in the 800 meters with a season record of 2:55.06 and fifth in the pole vault, tying with sophomore Victoria Montezuma.

Three freshmen held their own. Halle Garcia came in ninth in the high jump and thirteenth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 19.84. Kalin Yanez came in thirteenth in the triple jump with a personal best of 26-04.50. Isliana Morris came in the fifteenth in the long jump and fifteenth in the 200 meters with a personal best of 29.06.

The Girls Varsity was placed in two relays. They came in eighth in the 4×100 relay and twelfth in the 4×400 relay. In the final ranking point system, the Fort Bragg High School Varsity Girls team earned 7th place.

For the Boys Varsity, seniors pulled out a number of personal bests and good finishes. Juan Calleja took third place in the long jump with a personal best of 20-05.00. Senior Ryan Ferris took fourth place in the discus with a personal best of 120-00.  Bryan Escobar-Cuellar took sixth place in the 110 meters with a personal best of 17.03 and sixth place in the 300-meter hurdles.

Kevin Conrrado May took seventh place in the 12 lb. shot put with a personal best of 39-06.00. Bishop Epperson took eighth place in the 12 lb. shot put with a personal best of 38-04.00 and sixteenth place in the discus. Branden Meyers took thirteenth place in the 800 meters.

Juniors had a strong showing. In the pole vault, junior Alex Iverson took first place with a personal best of 10-09.00, and teammate Kevin Perez took fifth place. Jose Diaz-Rodriguez took thirteenth place in the 100 meters with a personal best of 11.86, eleventh place in the 110-meter hurdles, and sixteenth place in the 300-meter hurdles.

Junior Elias Smith came in thirteenth in the 100 meters with a personal best of 23.81 and twelfth place in the long and triple jumps. Kevin Calderon took twelfth place in the discus, while teammate Finn Lenihan took sixteenth place. In the high jump, Ricardo Ceja placed thirteenth.

Freshman Cesar Escobar-Cuellar, joining varsity at mid-season, took eighth place in the 110-meter hurdles and seventh place in the 300-meter hurdles. The Boys Varsity placed in two relay races. The 4×400 relay team took fourteenth place, and the 4×800 relay team came in fifth. Overall, the total points for the Fort Bragg High School Varsity Boys team earned them a fifth-place team ranking.

On Saturday, May 20, team members with the top three records per event will compete at Dublin High School in the Meet of Champions. The outcomes of that event will determine qualifiers for the State Track and Field Meet held on Friday, May 26th, and Saturday, May 27th.
