A major development may be coming to Conway. Opposition is already mounting.
CONWAY — A massive mixed-use development being proposed off a busy Conway road would add thousands more daily trips and impact wetlands — drawing public outcry before even single vote has been taken. "This is already a flood-prone area. Removing wetlands that naturally absorb stormwater and replacing them with buildings, parking lots, and other impervious surfaces will only increase concerns about runoff, drainage, and flooding for surrounding properties," Kim Lineweber, who identifies herself as a "concerned Horry County resident and flood victim" said in an email to city planners. The propos...

A turn of the century Florence home was just demolished. It once housed railway workers.
FLORENCE — A dilapidated historical home at the corner of a busy Florence intersection has been demolished. The house at the corner of East Darlington and East Lucas streets had been a landmark in the community for more than a century, with early records indicating that the house had been around since at least 1905, according to Francis Marion University Associate Professor of History Erica Johnson. It stood through the rise of the railroad, the creation of the healthcare systems and multiple large changes made to Florence’s downtown — including demolitions of whole rows of historically signif...

Florence neighborhood may be demolished to make way for affordable townhomes
FLORENCE — A recently approved Florence rezoning may lead to the demolition of a small neighborhood of 1950s-era homes. The city of Florence’s Planning Commission approved the rezoning of 18 parcels, all containing single-family homes, on North Aiken Drive off West Evans Street at its most recent planning meeting. The homes are all rentals and were under a zoning that made multi-family housing not an option, according to senior planner with the city, Alane Zlotnicki. Zlotnicki defined the neighborhood as a “donut-hole” of single-family homes that are surrounded by commercial developments. The ...

A developer wants to build a big-box store in Conway. Conservation groups are pushing back.
CONWAY — Environmental groups are raising concerns about a developer's plans to fill wetlands for a Conway shopping complex that would include a big-box anchor and a grocery store. The developer is seeking approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fill nearly 5 acres of wetlands on a site along Mill Pond Road near the U.S. Highway 501 intersection. "In the scheme of things, 5 acres of wetland fill given all of the development in Horry County is not that significant," said Becky Ryon of the Coastal Conservation League, one of the groups opposed to the project. "But given its location (a...
