FDL WOMAN PLEADS TO DRUNKEN DRIVING INJURY CHARGE

The 54-year-old Fond du Lac woman who was drunk when she hit a man walking his scooter across a street in Fond du Lac last September has pled no contest to an injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle charge. Terri Huettl was in Fond du Lac County court for a plea hearing last Thursday. A second charge was read into the record and dismissed. According to the criminal complaint when Huettl’s truck struck the 18-year-old Fond du Lac man on September 2nd he hit her windshield and flew into the air. Medical staff who treated him told police he suffered a fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, broken clavicle, and severe internal bleeding. A partial portable breathalyzer test administered at the county jail put Huettl’s blood alcohol concentration at nearly 2 ½ times the legal limit. She will be sentenced on July 19th.

DODGE COUNTY INJURY CRASH

Dodge County Sheriff’s officials say a 25-year-old rural Reeseville man was injured in a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 151 at Jackson Road in the Town of Calamus just before nine o’clock Monday morning. Austin Krause was driving his pickup truck north on Highway 151 when he collided with a semi-truck and trailer. Flight for Life flew Krause to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver, 56-year-old Robert Krieg of rural Juneau, was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

CAMPBELLSPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT SCAM

Campbellsport Police are warning residents about a scam. They say if you receive a letter in the mail from the Campbellsport Police Department requesting monetary donations for the police department to purchase a tactical vest, it is a scam. The police department has not sent out any such letters and has no affiliation with the letters. The address where the donations are supposed to be sent to is not the police department address and is not in Wisconsin. If you received a similar letter and sent a donation, contact your local law enforcement agency. A Campbellsport resident contacted the police department directly to bring their attention to the scam.

SMOKE FROM A DISTANT FIRE

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says smoke from wildfires in Canada and neighboring states can have an impact on those with respiratory and chronic illness problems. She says if the state’s Department of Natural Resources issues an Air Quality Advisory or Warning those with respiratory issues should heed them. She notes the particles from the long-distant fires are so small they are easily inhaled. She says it could trigger short-term respiratory problems for those who are more susceptible with symptoms including coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and asthma exacerbation. She says the very young, the very old, and those with respiratory problems would be likely to be affected by air quality. She recommends limiting your time outdoors or your level of exertion if you fall into one of those at-risk groups.

RIPON KIWANIS CLUBS ALL INCLUSVE PLAYGROUND FUNDRAISER

The Ripon Kiwanis clubs are launching a fundraising campaign for a brand-new, all-inclusive playground at Riggs County Park. The Early Bird and Noon Kiwanis Clubs will be holding an information and talkback session tonight at 5:30, in the Ripon High School Community room, where members of the community can learn all about the project, ask questions and find out how they can get involved.  The playground will be located directly adjacent to the Kiwanis splash pad for easy access. Ground prep is scheduled to start later this year with installation of the equipment starting the following spring or summer. Research findings have consistently shown the incredible benefits of inclusive playgrounds. They foster social interaction, promote physical activity, and enhance cognitive development among children of all abilities. The all-inclusive playground would be for children ages 5 to 12, and it would include 43 features for up to 238 users. More information is available and donations can be made online.

RURAL PHARMACY LEGISLATION

State Representative Alex Dallman has reintroduced a bill this legislative session designed to attract more pharmacists to rural areas. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says licensed pharmacists are another group in the health care field that are less likely to locate to a rural area after they graduate from college. His Rural Pharmacy Grant bill is designed to offer financial incentives to those new pharmacists to locate to a rural community, which are typically underserved. He points out the bill is similar to legislation that was created to incentivize teachers to teach at urban schools when they were coming out of school. Dallman says a pharmacist education is expensive often leaving graduating students with student debts of $180,000 to $200,000.

DISASTER VOLUNTEER RECEPTION CENTER

Fond du Lac County United Way Executive Director Amber Kilawee says volunteers are needed when disasters occur to man a Disaster Volunteer Reception Center. Where that center will be located depends on where and when a disaster arises in the county, but Kilawee says we know from past events like tornadoes and flooding that disasters do occur in the county. She says they would be working with Fond du Lac County’s Emergency Management Office. She says disaster volunteers will require supervision. She notes some work would focus on cleanup efforts, but people can bring their own skill sets to those efforts especially with a little training. Those who might be interested in the opportunity are encouraged to visit the Fondy Volunteers.org website.
