Foley, Ala. - (OBA) - Foley, a city known for its commitment to progress, is set to embark on a major endeavor aimed at improving its airport facilities. In line with this vision, city officials have announced plans to demolish an old, storm-damaged house located on the corner of the Foley Airport. The move comes as part of an ongoing effort to expand the airport and enhance its capabilities.
The abandoned house, situated on Underwood Road, has stood neglected for several years. However, its significance in the context of the airport's expansion cannot be understated. Mayor Ralph Hellmich explained that the city had acquired the property with the specific intention of expanding the airport's footprint.
"It was purchased as part of the airport," Mayor Hellmich emphasized. "It squared off the airport on the north end."
While the structure had served as a storage facility for the city's model railroad display in the past, its current condition renders it unusable. In 2020, Hurricane Sally inflicted severe damage on the house, toppling trees and leaving the building in ruins.
"Hurricane Sally, though, laid a couple of trees and crushed it pretty thoroughly on the west side, so it's pretty well shot," Mayor Hellmich revealed.
The Foley City Council, recognizing the importance of this expansion project, voted in May to approve the removal of asbestos siding and other materials from the house. This crucial step towards demolition incurs a cost of $12,000 but is deemed necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of the construction process.
In addition to the demolition, the council has also updated its plans for the airport expansion. The forthcoming enhancements include the construction of an eight-unit T-hangar and a new taxiway, both of which are slated for completion during the 2023 fiscal year. To accommodate these additions, the council approved a change order, increasing the engineering costs for the project by $3,787. The total engineering expenses now stand at $259,588.
The Foley Airport expansion project symbolizes the city's dedication to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for its residents and visitors. By revitalizing the airport facilities, Foley aims to attract more air traffic, foster economic growth, and enhance the overall travel experience for its community.
The mayor expressed his optimism about the future of Foley Airport, stating, "These upgrades will position our airport as a modern hub of transportation and play a pivotal role in our city's progress."
As the city of Foley paves the way for a brighter future, the demolition of the storm-damaged house and subsequent airport expansion serve as tangible symbols of growth and development. With each step forward, Foley is cementing its reputation as a forward-thinking community dedicated to creating a thriving and efficient infrastructure for all.
