With hurricane season at its peak, Florida residents are searching for reliable resources to prepare for potential storms. The Florida Hurricane and Storm Updates Facebook group offers practical guidance and reliable information about hurricanes and relief efforts. Experts predict an above-normal hurricane season this year, and this network provides an invaluable lifeline.

Founded in 2016 by Kimberley Ledford after evacuating Tallahassee for a hurricane, this group has become a vital resource for thousands statewide.

When she couldn’t reach loved ones during the evacuation chaos, Kimberley realized they needed a dedicated space to share updates and critical details. The group grew organically as Floridians found it a helpful resource, and it now has over 7,500 members.

Beyond facilitating communication, the group provides actionable hurricane prep advice to anxious first timers and veterans alike. Checklists detail essential supplies, while interactive maps showcase potential flooding zones and evacuation routes. During active storms, members share real-time updates from inside hurricane zones to keep evacuated families informed.

Ledford said that many coming to her page found it informative. “We had victims of hurricanes that said our Facebook page became more helpful, even more than local media at times. Individuals said they found more details on the page about what stores were opened or closed. Were those that needed help could find shelter, food and water,” said Ledford.

Ledford told Florida Daily that for many new residents from up North or out west, the next hurricane may be the first one they have ever experienced. Her group helps ease their fears and answer any questions they may have.

Ledford also said hurricanes often bring out the best in Floridians, as we help neighbors or strangers across the state get back on their feet after a storm. Her group has seen an increase in volunteers offering assistance to those in need.
