America will do nothing but get more and more diverse in a variety of demographics, including age and ethnicity, as time goes on, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . But which U.S. state is currently most diverse?

Personal finance company WalletHub just released its 2024 diversity rankings and Florida placed in the top five most diverse states in the U.S.

““Race and gender are probably the first things that come to mind when people think about diversity, but there’s plenty more that makes this nation diverse,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in the study.

“The most diverse states have above-average variety when it comes to people’s ages, birthplaces, languages, jobs, family structures and more.”

Here’s where Florida ranked on WalletHub’s list of the most diverse U.S. states, why and which states are the most and least diverse.

What is the most diverse U.S. state?

To find its rankings, WalletHub compared each state across 14 metrics in six categories: socio-economic diversity, cultural diversity, economic diversity, household diversity, religious diversity and political diversity.

Based on the metrics in those categories, California ranks as WalletHub’s most diverse U.S. state. Texas took second place and Florida rounded out the top three.

“Florida is the third-most diverse state. One area where it stands out is that it has the second-most birthplace diversity. Over 21% of the population was born in a foreign country, a much higher percentage than in most states,” the study said.

“In addition, only around 36% of residents were born in Florida, while the highest percentage of U.S.-born residents moved from the Northeast and Midwest regions.”
