Almost 100 years of automotive engineering were on display at the Siuslaw Middle School Parking lot for the Lions Club 30th annual Car Show and Shine. Passenger vehicles ranging from the late 1920s to a brand new Tesla Cybertruck, and manufacturers from around the world were represented in the biggest show to date.

YACHATS — The rich and often overlooked history and legacy of African-Americans in Oregon is the topic of a 2 p.m. Sunday presentation at the Yachats Commons. “Uncovering Oregon’s Black History, 450 Years in 45 Minutes,” will be presented by Zachary Stocks, executive director of Oregon Black Pioneers, a historical society dedicated to “safeguarding and sharing the experiences” of African-Americans across the state.

Mapleton School District has been chosen to participate in the 2024-25 K-12 Farm to School Institute, a year-long professional development program supporting the expansion of robust farm to school initiatives. On Aug. 21, 1938, a dead whale washed up on the shore near Big Creek north of Yachats. The Corvallis Gazette-Times said the following day said “thousands” hit the beach trying to get a glimpse of the decaying and rather disgusting “monster” as it was often referred to, according to a story in the Oregon Coast Beach Connection. Some 50 feet in length and about 40 tons, newspapers at the time said it appeared to have been hit by a boat.

Free fishing events in Clatskanie, Estacada, Eugene, Gaston, Hebo, Junction City, Lakeside, Portland, Tillamook, Toledo, Florence, and Ukiah. Everyone can fish, clam and crab for free in Oregon on Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend of June.
Spring Concert June 1 and 2
The Community Chorus of Florence Oregon will be presenting its Spring Concert on June 1 & 2 at 3pm. The concert will be held at the Presbyterian Community Church (3996 Hwy 101 in Florence). Songs from a very wide variety of musical styles will be featured, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "You Raise Me Up", "Loch Lomond", a variety of show tunes, a madrigal, and even a Slovak folk tune about cows. Admission is free, though donations are greatly appreciated! The Community Chorus of Florence Oregon was organized to provide a musical experience for all people who enjoy singing. Auditions are not required, and new members are always welcome! If you are interested in singing, please send an e-mail to communitychorusflorenceoregon@gmail.com so you can be notified when rehearsals begin again in the Fall.
